[TriLUG] Tax Preparation

I can't imagine anyone open-sourcing a tax preparation app, simply
because
of the nature of the problem, liability, etc. And keeping up with tax
legislation. But maybe they exist. Or maybe just "free filing" is
close enough to what you're looking for.
Last year, I finally abandoned the big tax software providers, and I
moved
online to the scammy-sounding FreeTaxUSA.com . I did check to make
sure
they were recommended by the IRS and the NC-DOR first.
See:
* https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/
* https://www.ncdor.gov/file-pay/efile-resources-taxpayers/nc-free-file
In the process of moving, I ended up filling out tax forms using
FreeTaxUSA's
online service and also H&R Block's TaxCut (running on a Windows VM on
Ubuntu).
And the results of the two matched.
Hope this helps. And maybe someone here will enlighten us to other
options.
