The lines above are a descriptor of the machine, but no-one is offering
any evidence that there are deficiencies in the machine, much less
deficiences at the level of negligence.

Apparently pilot isn't in such a state of negligence that the people who
find its state negligent, are motivated to fix it.

The above specs are normal for a machine designed to be left on the
internet for years at a time, with a minimal level of service.

Software providers keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be
led to safety) by an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary,
so that they will spend all their lives updating perfectly working
machines with the latest software. For me updating once a year is the most
I'll tolerate. If more frequent updates are needed, then you didn't write
the code properly in the first place and it shouldn't have been released.

Here's my work machine I'm using to send this e-mail.

# uname -a
Linux router172b 2.6.37.6-smp #2 SMP Sat Apr 9 23:39:07 CDT 2011

# more /usr/lib/pkgconfig/openssl.pc
..
Version: 1.0.2h

I've had a map generator on the internet for 30yrs (currently offline. I'm
moving it to a VM). Here's the current iteration of this machine, built
May 2012.

# uname -a
Linux dennis 2.4.37.9

# more /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libssl.pc
..
Version: 0.9.8m

The machines work fine and haven't been hacked. I only have one account on
both of these machines, root.

Don't upgrade a working machine - it won't work any
better - it could work worse; it may not work at all.
