There are two projects under way that will greatly impact the future. They are the Virtual machines BOCHS and Plex86. Both are open source and free.
BOCHS seeks to emulate the IA-64 CPU on as many *NIX platforms as it can - PowerPC, Alpha, etc, etc.
Plex86 Uses some parts of bochs in it's code.
