Notes:
VMWare is by far the best Virtual Machine around. It will run on kernels through 2.4.5 without trouble, and with user-contributed patches for kernels above that (right now)
It runs Most x86 Oses, and not just Windows.
It is very system resource intensive, though.
It is not free, although the lowest level offering is only ~$60
