Mailed to current NCSSM Students on Tuesday, 4/27/99: --- Administration prefers to lead by preventing problems rather than reacting to external forces, but sometimes there are events that transcend that preference. The Littleton, Colorado school massacre is an event that chills my soul. I want to believe that this kind of event, would not, could not, occur at NCSSM, but recent events in the news undermine that belief. The leadership in Littleton was unable to prevent the slaughter of people in that community. What can we do? Perhaps with our combined wisdom and experiences, we can reduce the risk in our community during these difficult times, and make schools like NCSSM a safer place to live and learn for its students and staff. To that end, we have scheduled a mandatory meeting in the General Assembly Hall for all students and staff. There will be a brief overview of the issues to be discussed followed by breakout sessions at places to be assigned. We are using time at the end of Alt Day for this important function. Event: Mandatory meeting on school safety Place: General Assembly Hall of FETC Date: April 30th, 1999 Time: 3:45 p.m. Each of you is precious to us so I ask that each of you approach this topic in a serious, yet optimistic fashion so that NCSSM can be part of the solution, not only for individuals, but also for the community we share. I ask that you help us see and meet our responsibilities to each other as a caring and ethical extended family and community. United we stand... Dr. John Friedrick
