NCSSM chief listens, 'gets things done'

How much diversity do you need before it becomes a terrible thing to have? As a student at the N.C. School of Science & Mathematics, I see plenty of diversity, both among the students and staff.

There was no reason to have an independent commission investigate diversity and fairness at NCSSM. We are too quick to point fingers when diversity issues get out of hand, and that is what is wrong with us today. What happens when you yell fire in a crowd?

Director John Friedrick is a good man. Contrary to popular belief, he does listen to students and he does get things done. I would much rather have a person in charge who argues than someone who gives in.

The report also states there is dissension among the NCSSM staff. If this were the case something would have been done, knowing how quickly things are accomplished in the school.

It was inappropriate to have an independent commission investigating our problems. These issues should have been handled by parents, students and faculty, because it is they who make NCSSM's reputation as a school of high stature.

As for declining applicants of all races, it is because the school gets bad publicity like this more often that having good things published. To those who are thinking about applying to NCSSM, ignore such things - they are not true. It is time we quit measuring institutions on how diverse they are.
