Toward the end of the meeting, they passed the following resolution: "The Board of Trustees of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics received the report of the Independent Commission on Fairness and Diversity and welcomes the opportunity to provide leadership as we move forward. We will use elements of the report to create a more fair and diverse community. We are committed to working with our current executive director, administration, faculty, staff, students, parents and others in exploring contributions we each can make to the vibrant marketplace of ideas that characterizes this school and is the reason that it deserves the trust and support of the people of North Carolina. "The Board takes seriously its leadership responsibilities and looks forward to addressing the observations and recommendations stated in the report. This will be an on-going process to build the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics of tomorrow." The Board also started developing next steps for improving communications, clarifying the Executive Director's evaluation process, exploring how to structure a "robust exchange of ideas" between the Board and the NCSSM community, and examining other recommendations of the Independent Commission report. The next Board of Trustees meeting will be on Friday, May 1.
