Open Source Case Study: Mail Server
Results:
- Mail Server uptime = 100%
- Current server load = 5k email/hour
- Estimated Maximum Limit = 20k email/hour (per server)
- Average Mail delivery time = 20 seconds
- Dramatically lowered the time spent in-house dealing with virus out-breaks (viruses mainly stopped by mail policies)
- Spam levels remain consistently low
Notes:
The implementation was a success and the client is very happy.
One of the key elements to the implementation was the adaptability of Linux.
The IT personnel were accustomed to applications that were easily monitored and
configured
via a Graphical User Interface. In order to give the IT personnel a familiar experience
The servers were set to boot into X-windows (a graphical front-end), and interactions
with the applications were scripted and launched via icons (from the desktop).
The administration and monitoring of the servers was now easier than the previous
server install, and the implementation of Mail Policies was a big hit within the
organization.
