I think you misunderstood my question.  I see, though, you've 
answered it below.

Basically, my concern was that I've setup the imap server to
*only* work using secure imap (imaps).  It will not work as
just plain imap, *unless* you use the TLS facility (which starts
SSL on the imap port).  This is completely independent of the
web part of it.

But, since squirrel mail can do imaps, we're all set. :-)
