You are used to FAT* filesystems, a very unefficient way of file storage 
systems. They can compare to a file cabinet, where you open the next empty 
drawer each time you want to file a file. When you delete a file, you remove 
the file but never bother to take note of where is that empty drawer.

Linux uses ext2 (usually) wich is a pretty efficient filesystem. The idea 
behind it is to have a pretty smart system. So the files are stored where 
they fit. There's a "list" of empty locations, so you can locate "which 
drawer" can hold this specific file.
