Isn't it interesting how the MS user base has to fight tooth and nail for the
openness that we have gotten used to? Asking Microsoft for more honesty is
like asking a casino for better odds at the slot machine. It's not going to
happen.
Ultimately, the settlement thing doesn't bother me. From a legal
perspective, I think it's bogus that they aren't being punished for breaking
the law. But from a software perspecive, I don't think it hurts Linux If
the settlement actually made MS treat their customers and partners better,
then maybe Linux wouldn't look so attactive. I hope MS keeps doing what it's
doing, by requiring product activation and attempting to silence the security
experts. I wish they'd quadruple the price of their software and make it
truly unpirateable. The more painful they make it to do business with them,
the more attractive the alternatives look.
For the folks at NTBugTraq, finding an alternative to NT is so much easier
than calling for some kind of "Information Anarchy" (whatever that means). I
think that they will never get the freedom they desire as long as they are
beholden to one vendor.
