sounds like either the BIOS lost its drive information, or that a drive
cable is simply loose. you might go into the BIOS and tell it to rescan
the IDE chain for devices or whatever. you might also crack open the case
and check the IDE cables and/or jumper settings. you might also try the
drive in another computer, it might be defective.

everything is screaming hardware problem, i would be surprised if this had
anything to do with linux per se. good luck.
