I have had better luck importing M$ Office documents and spreadsheets
into StarOffice (5.2 or 6 beta) myself. There are a few nice articles
about StarOffice at http://www.consultingtimes.com/. The problem that I
have been running into on my project is that we have been using
WordPerfect for Unix and we have found no good way to directly import
these documents into any of the Linux office products (we decided
against WPO 2000 for Linux because Corel has pretty much said that there
will be no follow on product).
