Greetings,

I have a Vaio myself (and I've even replaced the hard drive).
I don't think, however, that you've given us quite enough
information to help you solve your problem. First of all,
which Vaio do you have (e.g. I have the PCG-F280)? What
type of hard drive was the one you took out (please post
more than just size, please also post manufacturer and
drive type) and what type of hard drive did you attempt
to replace it with.

It's possible (although it doesn't seem likely) that the
bios is old enough to have a problem with the new drive.
Or, it could be something else entirely.

Oh, to get to the Vaio Bios, press F2 when it boots
(When the sony logo comes up) and it should put
you into the bios setup screen where you should
be able to see what the hard drive is currently
set to. You probably want it on something like
"automatic".
