[TriLUG] wlan setup

I'm trying to set up a wlan using a D-Link 713P wireless broadband router and
a Lucent Orinoco (one of the earlier production ones actually labeled
"WaveLAN Turbo 11 Mb Silver IEEE 802.11") on a RHL7.2 laptop. I've seen
others on the list using similar configurations and I'm hoping they can offer
some tips.

The router is conected directly to a DSL modem and is working
properly in its default configuration. Using standard ethernet, my laptop
gets an IP address via DHCP from the router and can surf w/o any additional
configuration necessary.

Unfortunately, I've not had the same success setting up the wireless aspect.
It is clear that all is not well between the access point and the PC card,
however I haven't figured out much beyond that. I've been mucking about in
/etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts but haven't changed anything as I am unsure where
to start.

My Question:
What's the minimum configuration that needs to be done to get the PC card
talking to the WAP/router?

I'd like to get the wlan working for the trivial case (no encryption, default
values, etc.) and build from there. (Yes, I'm aware of all the problems
associated with an unencrypted connection and No, I don't plan to keep it
that way once I've established that everything works properly.)

Below, I've included a snippet from /var/log/messages that shows what happens
when the wlan card is inserted.

Thanks.
