Wish list for my dream home (which I plan on making my next home after
my present townhouse has been outgrown):
Power: Whole house surge protection, whole house UPS, whole house Backup
Generator and Solar Panels.
Cabling: I would definitely go with conduits which I can run different
cabling through. I would probably start out with Cat6 and run a good
2-4 cables from top to bottom for wired backbone. I transfer a lot of
big files around from one computer to another so 100Mbit Full duplex is
a minimum, would probably go for 1Gbit full duplex for the backbone. I
would also include wireless like I have now for just leisure
web/email/print resources around the house and out on the porch.
802.11a is out now and that has 56Mbit throughput which is nice, but
still not 100Mbit full. I would wire all rooms with phone, data, and
coax, and maybe some form of digital audio/video for sharing
entertainment sources.
I definitely would go with a mix of the two. Wireless is great, but
hurts when sending large files (think ISO images). Cables handle the
big stuff, but it sucks running a 100" cable out to the porch to surf
the web in the sun.
