While I am well known as a Red Hat user, I actually Like a lot of what
debian does. I know that if I install debian on 99% of the hardware I
own, it will work, and be rock solid.
And while I cannot say that about Red Hat or Mandrake, I can say that
there are cases where Debian won't fit, either. My bleeding edge laptop
has kernel issues with *ALL* distros because of it's ACPI-only BIOS (or
lack of BIOS, as the case may be), requiring numerous tweaks to any
distro. I use Red Hat with it because Red hat is a better fit right
now.
I put debian on my EV4 alpha systems when I want something newer than
RHL 6.2 (since RH dropped EV4 in 7.x).
In any case, a distro is like a text editor - some people like vi,
others emacs, and others still like pico (and some poor deluded souls
long for a port of Windows Notepad, but that's just wrong). The ability
to choose is what sets Linux apart from that other OS, because if I
don't like what I see in one, I can always roll my own and make that
perfect fit for me.
