[TriLUG] Bio

Hello,

That's cool. We have similar experiences. I'm a Hopkins alumni (MSEE) as
well and I cut my teeth on Ygrassil Linux. Did you attend APL or main
campus? For what's it worth, I did a mix of APL and home campus classes.

Well here's the rambling rundown on myself.

I've attended TriLug from pretty much the beginning - way back before we
had a steering committee and we met at the Glonges house. (When we started
meeting at our temporary home at Cisco, I even managed to get permission
from my employer at WG to let us use space there in case we needed it. We
never needed it and thus it never happened.) I've been a Tirlug fan
because when I started using Linux it wasn't cool and I didn't know anyone
else who used it. During the early years of my Linux experience, the only
people I knew using Linux were people I only knew online. (And by online,
I mean as in Vt100 access and zmodem for downloads. Netscape was still
mosaic and who cared about mosaic anyway. Usenet, gopher, and IRC was
where the online action was anyway.) Later, I switched to Slackware
because of the name. That and the fact, I managed to download if for free
onto floppies. (I paid $50 for the ygdrassil cdrom back in 1992.) I
continued to use Slackware even after Redhat came out. I had a fondness
for the Redhat guys being that they were in NC and I was from NC, but
slackware worked for me and I didn't feel like switching. While working at
WG, I kept hearing people say that if I was a Slackware fan, I would
appreciate Debian. So, I tried Debian and Its been my favorite ever since.

Over the years, I've had other Free Software Experiences. I did some work
for netwrks.com as a RedHat Linux 4.x/5.x Admin. I did the initial setup
for Jiacom.com on Linux. I setup their DNS, Sendmail, and Cyclades router
using Debian. (All of this was done in my spare time as a 1099
consultant.) I also played with xBSD along the way. (In fact, I remember
BSD before there was the split between Open, Net, and Free.)

I maintain my own domain Skink.Net. - only as a means of getting my mail.
The webserver is still up, but I don't spend much time on it anymore. I
used to host websites for money, but I didn't make much money and now I'd
rather spend my time elsewhere. However, I was never hacked and I think I
ran it pretty good.

Hmm. What else?

I've been a software developer for more than 10 years now. I've written C,
Assembly, C++, Perl, TCL/TK, shell scripts, Java, etc. I'm basically a
Unix/Embedded/Win32 programmer. You name it I've probably written code for
it. GUIs to Daemons.

My latest job is writing network code for VxWorks and Linux. My last job
here at IBM was porting Linux to the embedded powerpc 405 core inside the
NP4GS3 network processor. (Its kinda cool to get paid to write Linux
Kernel code and device drivers, especially at IBM.)

Anyway, I need to get back to work.

Please vote for me. I would like to work with the rest of the folks to
help the club get by another year.

JD

ps. Tanner, I'll talk to you tonight about the expect scripts. Since Jon
says user only have access to one machine, it sounds like changing
passwords on multiple machines is not a issue anyway.

Jon had asked the nominees for the SC for their bio, so here goes.

If you happened to be at the last meeting, I gave the talk
on OpenPGP/GPG.

I first became interested in Linux in the summer of 1994 when
a friend mentioned it to me. I started with Slackware on floppy
disk and briefly tried out Ygdrassil before settling on Redhat.
I used Redhat until 1999 when I switched to Mandrake. I am married
(7.5 years now) and have a 10 month old son. I got my M.S. degree
in computer science at Johns Hopkins University and now work
as a C++ network programmer at Oculan. I've been involved with
the LUG for almost a year now, but I did go to the very first
LUG meeting ever at the ILS department at UNC. My experience
with leadership includes holding the post of President of the
Computer Science Students Association at UNC (1999-2000), being
on the Board of Directors of the NC Eastern Region Odyssey of the
Mind 1998-present, the NC State Board of Directors of Odyssey of
the Mind (1998-2002), the Northern Virginia Odyssey of the Mind
Board of Directors (1996-1998). In addition, I have run the
mailing list for the Society of Creative Anachronism Kingdom of
Atlantia since 1994.

My goals, if I am elected to the SC, would be to explore new
ways for the LUG to make its resources available to LUG members
(i.e. the mail server, shell server, ftp mirrors, etc..) and
to search for more LUG sponsorship. I think that the LUG
would benefit from having a bigger cushion in the bank
in case need it. I would also like to solicit more feedback
from the membership about what kind of subjects they'd like
to see for the monthly talks. I think it would be nice
if we could attempt schedule talks a month or two in advance.

I personally think the current steering committee has done
a wonderful job and I commend them for it. I think the LUG
is well positioned to go forward and grow into an even better
organization.

Oh, and if you would like to see what I look like (in case you
weren't at the last meeting), you can look at my web page
at http://wtl.wayfarer.org/.

This would be a very good time to hang out with the Open Source
people, before they get formally reclassified as a national security
 threat. -- Bruce Sterling
