however, if you only want to copy a single partition from one disk to
another partion on a second disk, just add the partition number:
dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/dev/hdb6
this assumes that the partitions are the same size. i've copied both fat32
and ext2/3 partitions using this method without incident.
