I haven't done this in awhile, but i don't understand the "are partitioned
exactly alike" - since the dd copies the partition table (residing in
the first sector) as well, what would it matter what the dest partition
table was like before the dd?

geometry's a potential issue, but a few years back I did it with diff geom
drives and it worked fine (block size of 1 sector may have helped that)
