[TriLUG] Question: LAN Gaming Party (where?)

The most common way to work with sound in Linux is OSS. This gives you
the /dev/dsp* interface. There is a also ALSA, which is a whole new set
of drivers that offers more functionality than OSS, and furthermore, can
emulate OSS (provide /dev/dsp*). On top of that, you can use ARTS or ESD,
or whatever you please. My personal method is to just use OSS, chmod
/dev/dsp1 and /dev/mixer to 666 and be done with it. No fussin, no
mucking around with sometimes flaky processes, no security. For a
personal box, this is probably the way to go. For a server, I would
suggest chowning the devices to the one account that actually ever sits in
front of the computer to hear the sound. For a lab computer, its time to
look at Arts or ESD, else you will have people SSHing into the box and
blasting things at will.

p.s. I'm down for the LAN party, I want to play. I don't have much of a
video card (g400) but I do have dual 1600+ XPs to throw into the server
mix.
