[TriLUG] Newbie question - Window Managers and Desktops

I haven't ventured far into the Window Managers and Desktops, from my happy
RHL KDE/Gnome installs. I'm wanting to "expand" my knowledge and was
wondering:

What are the differences between Window Managers and Desktops, and how do
they interact? Do I need a WM for a Desktop?

Just trying to understand the inner workings.
