FWIW,
 APC now offers for UPS' that are out of warranty, a service that where they
will send you a new battery and will "reinstate" your UPS warranty for 2
years. We used it on some of our UPS' here and it works well. The cost was
approx. 1/3 the cost of the new UPS. Granted our UPS'are in the $1000.00+
range, but if you need this kind of service,

for this UPS it was much cheaper, since we had gotten the UPS for free. 
It was about $100 cheaper than just replacing the unit, but it was a big
UPS.
