[TriLUG] local pc suppliers?

stay online (stayonline.com) has been a very good place to get more
esoteric parts that you can't find at more run-of-the-mill stores. they
are a little more weighted towards server equipment than
workstation/desktop stuff and thus usually has a good supply of things
like KVM switches, UPS's, racks, etc.

as far a PCs go, look for the following in a supplier:

1. uses proven, name brand parts (it is rarely worth saving a few bucks
for no-name generic stuff)

2. specs that match the end use (be wary of someone who tries to sell you
a $200 video card for an office pc, or a $3000 server with only IDE disks)

3. be subjective - does it have loud whiny fans or a flimsy feeling case?
if you perceive the quality to be poor from the outside, don't expect much
on the inside either.

if you have specific needs (small footprint, low noise, linux specific
hardware, special server configuration, etc) i can build you something to
match. after building dozens of PCs i can tell you from experience what
parts give you the most bang for the buck, what works well with linux out
of the box, etc.
