CUPs is definately the easiest *nix print solution I've ever used or
configured.  You probably want to look at foomatic
(http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic.html) and see if generating a
driver definition helps.  I've only started working with the migration
from everyone having direct access to the jetdirect interface to the
print server, so I can't help much more than this, but once I get it set
up, I can post again on how I did it.
