Mysql authentication is host based.  That allows for virtual hosts in 
the database as well as the web server, mail server, etc.  Thus you can 
have jondoe at host1 and jondoe at host2 be two completely different users 
with separate passwords.  That's all well and good, but it makes for 
very convoluted "single host" authentication.

The -h is the remote host.  It couldn't find Linux1.local to connect to. 
 What you really want to do is mysqladmin -u 'root@%' password 
'newpassword'.

This will set the root password across all domains (read virtual 
servers) to 'newpassword'
