If you have a linux box on the outside you tunnel the gAIM connection 
through SSH to the outside machine. (aka local port forwarding)

If you proxy, Your proxy target should be toc.oscar.aol.com and I 
believe it uses the same port as the native AIM client, 5190.  (I think)

http://toc.oscar.aol.com has a cool java client otherwise.

http://www.aol.com/aim has a more advanced "quick buddy" java applet but 
I've found the one above friendlier on non-wintel platforms.
