[TriLUG] Novell jumps into Linux

It's been my experience that Novell has had a great administration
presence from the get go.

They had the "blue screen" menu system which was great and easy to use in
ver 4 and earlier. Then came their java gui which crippled slower machines
but was a very usable windows based front end. They had consistency in the
"ufi" User Friendly Interface.

With all of the different distro's and desktops linux hasn't been able to
present that front.

We went from Novell 3.12 to NT4 when NDS and AD were first emerging about
three or four years ago because it made sense given the support
methodology's and ease of use with their desktop.

However I think Novell is being more linux friendly and also trying to
help find financial stability in the economy.

Linux isn't a do all - end to end server platform YET, in my opinion.

Novell is.

They also have a super pricing structure at this point.

Last I heard, servers were free and cal's cost money. I think that's a
pretty respectable offering.

This rant and a quarter will get you a phone call.

Forgive me if I'm a little less enthusiastic. :)

Yes, Novell ties it all together nicely. Yes, Novell has some features
that the free alternatives don't.

No, I'm not convinced it's worth the price. And no, Novell's sales
force was not responsive when I tried buying their products for a
client of mine who wanted robust directory services under Linux. Let's
hope that their years of decline in market share has made them hungry
enough to address these concerns adequately.
