It sounds like your kernel doesn't have the correct driver for
the disk compiled in and you either aren't using an initrd
to load the module or the module is not in your initrd file.
Did you create a new initrd when you installed this?
BTW, you should *not* have to use lilo. This should work fine
in grub.
