YES, RR in the Triangle area does try to put users on the USB connected cable. 
I specifically had to request I get an RJ45 connection, which they actually
gave me a cheapo 10mbit card too (which I have kindly never used).  The cable
modem I have allows for both, but I bet, unless they have changed, they'll try
to bring you USB unless you specify.  I'd make sure you ask Customer Service or
Ordering about that.
