Two things to try:

1. Make sure WinXP Pro's built in firewall is disabled on the network 
interface.  This can and will block samba connections. (you can tweak the 
firewall rules later)

2. Have you tried doing the registry edits that are required for WinXP Pro 
to connect to domains.  These involve methods of authentication, and may 
also have an effect on workgroup file sharing.  I haven't done workgroup 
file sharing between samba and XP Pro, only samba as a PDC to XP Pro (and 
yes file shares worked great).

I'll ponder some more, but those are my first two thoughts.
