[TriLUG] dell laptop - bad X

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone on this list has had any luck getting a decent X 
display on a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop.  It apparently uses an Intel 845 
video chipset and I can not get it to run at greater than 640x480 unless I 
go down to 256 colors.  256 colors would actually not be so terrible 
except when I switch to a virtual console the screen has become really 
dim. If I try to a greater number of colors it appears the system does not 
have enough video memory to do this.  I have done some google searches but 
am not finding anything very clear.
