Apologies for the off-topic post, but I seem to recall
there being considerable interest on the list, last time
this issue came up.

Looks like Congress has grafted some of the more insidious
aspects of the so called Patriot Act II into a different
bill, and stealthily passed it.

Any of you who are politically active, I encourage you to make
phone call / write letters to your congressional representatives
and let them know how you feel about this.
