I've got a plextor dvd+-_%^&#RW(AM) (ie it supports all current media). Works well under linux (redhat in this case)
media is the thing to watch out for. dvd+r and dvd-r are quite different. cdrecord (ie dvdrecord) supports -r media. But to use +r media (which is often faster) you'll need the dvd+rw-tools stuff, and use growisofs. I know weird command to burn a dvd but that's what works. All and all it all works (especially with the plextor I'm using) it's just kinda funky learning all the ins and outs of media and tools.
