I had some luck by editing my /etc/yum.conf and changing to another 
mirror.  The Fedora site has a lot of mirrors listed.  Locally, 
ftp://mirror.physics.ncsu.edu is a good starting point.

Did you try KDE yet?  It seems even faster (starting up) than Gnome (which 
is already pretty fast)
