[TriLUG] speaking of pda's

Sharp has only been batting about .500 when it comes to the Linux
community. For every step forward they seem to take a step backwards.
They originally setup their sync to work via FTP, but also left the root
user-name and password wide open to hackers if you attached to a
network. They patched this by limiting connections to the USB ip
address, but that wasn't a great solution. So when they released the
5600 series and the matching ROMS for the 5500 they completely changed
their sync system. Unfortunately they only released sync software for
Windows. They didn't release the sync protocol either.

It pretty much comes down to lack of communications and lack of
understanding how the Linux community works. Maybe someday they will
get it. I love my Zaurus, but I do miss being able to sync. Truthfully
unless I see Sharp make a major improvement in Linux relations and
developer community, this will be the last Zaurus I own. It great, but
it's a dead end path at the moment with Sharp not really playing ball.
My next PDA will probably be a Palm based SmartPhone. One less gadget
to keep around, and sync as well.
