This depends on your POP server.

I installed a POP server called "teapop" last night.  It allows you to store
usernames and passwords for each mailbox in several different ways.  I
chose the quick-n-dirty "plain text file" method.  It also supports PAM,
/etc/passwd, a MySQL database, and several other options.
