Greetings,
Recently went through a remarkably similar problem myself, bellsouth
doesn't seem to like Linux coustomers ("What operating systems are you
running, again?") As was somewhat suggested, I just told the modem
(westell) to run on a bridged ethernet connection, and then configured
PPPoE in the router (linksys wireless) - bingo connection - static ip
popped up in the router status page. From there little things like
forwarding ports 80, etc. to the server and everything was up and running.
I do know, however, that if you need more than one static ip from
bellsouth that you will have to leave the westell, it can't handle the
authentication of multiple ips, or will have to ditch the linksys for a
better router.
good luck,

friendly - not a single windoze box there - plus a good wireless
connection that's open late. http://www.raleighcompanystore.com
