I've had the most success by ignoring the GUI config stuff and
configuring CUPS using the browser-based configs.

http://localhost:631/ should get you to the admin page.  You'll need to
enter your root password to get into the page.

The other thing I do is check out www.linuxprinting.org for the low-down
on how well the printer works, what driver to use, and get an up-to-date
PPD file.  Check out
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1200
for details on your printer.
