You've already gotten a lot of good suggestions from others, but I might
also add that gentoo has a great install guide for gmail.  If you're not
using gentoo, I wouldn't suggest following the guide, but you might want
to glance at it as a reference.  I usually read as much as I can on a
subject before tackling it.

btw, qmail is awesome!
