DISCLAIMER: I am not local, so these meeting announcements don't really
apply to me (barring sudden airline ticket specials).

That said, I myself don't mind this sort of cross-posting on lists I'm on,
provided it's done rationally. I don't always want the traffic that comes
with subscribing to another group's email lists, but when they're having a
talk by someone as well-known and interesting at Tom Limoncelli, I sure as
heck like to know about it so I can attend.

On the other appendage, I would recommend that *second* posts or reminders
of cross-posted announcements like this be made in brief format, a la:
========
This is a reminder that next meeting of the North Carolina System
Administrators will be Monday, September 13, 2004, at 7pm. Details
about this special meeting and directions are provided [on their website
(http://www.ncsysadmin.org)]

Topic: "Where the Heck is My Flying Car?"
Speaker: Tom Limoncelli, Co-author, The Practice of System and Network
Administration
Time & Date: 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 13, 2004
Location: Red Hat Corporate HQ, 1801 Varsity Dr, Raleigh, NC
========

That gets the essential details across to people, and tells them where to
find more info if they're interested. Where possible, it's also really nice
to append a comment when cross-posting to let people know why this might be
relevant to them: in this case, Tom L. is the author of the book above, one
  of the best guides to being a sysadmin out there, and is a good speaker
to boot. :)

Just my $0.02.
