I don't know if this would work in SuSE 9.1 (I'm using Gentoo), but you can try:
# ifconfig eth0 down
# iwconfig eth0 essid myessid channel mychannel key off
# ifconfig eth0 up
# dhcpcd eth0
Insert the university's values for 'myessid' and 'mychannel'. Good luck.
