Isaac,

A. You can use the 'lmsensors' tools if you hardware is supported. I
would check out: http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/ for some
information. I have managed to get this working on some systems at my
house but it has been a long time since I messed with it, and not on
Redhat 9

B. If your CPU is truely overheating then perhaps you have a heatsink
that is too small, the heatsink fan is dead, or the thermal connection
between the heatsink and CPU is poor. It could be that there is poor air
circulation in the computer case as well.

Likewise if the computer is in a room where the ambient temperature is
too hot (say 80+), then you've got other issues.

C. If the CPU fan is controlled by the software.... I'd personally look
for a way to make it run at full speed all the time. The cooler you keep
the CPU the longer it will last. Simply put.... Heat Kills =).
