I like to use time.ncsu.edu and clock2.unc.edu

The NSCU one is "better" from an NTP standpoint but they both work fine.

I don't run a local DNS server on my home network (is this the problem?) so I point my DNS requests to 4.2.2.2. I think I am missing something obvious here.. .what is it?

Dude! don't resolve using a primary DNS server! I'm surprised that it
answers you at all. Either run your own DNS or use the DNS you get from
DHCP.

When your network router comes online it gets DNS via DHCP - often you
can simply use your appliance based router/firewall as the DNS and it
acts as a DNS proxy for you.
