PANIC (Physics and Astronomy Network Infrastructure and Computing), a
small group of individuals providing computer support to the UNC Physics
and Astronomy Department, is currently seeking applicants for the following
temporary position:

ASSISTANT UNIX SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR (30 - 40 hrs/wk)
Job duties include:
    Help maintain and administer a growing network of unix workstations
        running Solaris, Linux, and MacOS X
    Support public-domain and commercial software (gnu software, latex,
        Mathematica, etc)
    Troubleshoot software and hardware, perform routine maintenance,
        perform hardware and software upgrades, and backups
    Install and setup new workstations
    Document problems and solutions
    Train other staff as necessary

Ideal candidates will possess good problem-solving skills and a superior
technical aptitude, be able to work independently -- managing and
coordinating assigned projects, and have the ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with both clients and colleagues.
Prior customer-service, help-desk, or teaching experience may prove helpful.

Desirable, but not mandatory, skills include: familiarity with most common
application software and unix utilities (gnu software, latex, etc), and the
ability to troubleshoot makefiles in order to build and install software
packages.

Knowledge of C, C++, perl, or java programming; experience writing shell
scripts or html code; experience with AFS or kerberos, or familiarity with
other platforms/operating systems including Win 98/2000/XP, and MacOS
would be advantageous.

Pay is commensurate with experience -- however as an edu institution, we
will not be able to pay as much as other industries.  This is a TEMPORARY
position and includes no benefits.  Preference may be given to individuals
who can commit to at least 8 months of employment.  Hours are between 8am
and 5pm, but are somewhat flexible.
