[TriLUG] >4 GB HIMEM Question

I have a dual Opteron (AMD64) machine that has 8 GB of memory installed
and needs to utilize all 8 GB.

However, currently the processors are running in 32 bit compatibility mode
under 32 bit RHE.  So my question is: would it be possible to recompile
the kernel as 32 bit with High Memory support [> 4 GB] (ie. is this an
Intel only option or will this work on AMD64) or will I have to install a
64 bit operating system in order to use all 8 GB?
