Thanx for the clue on the Win/ext2 compatibility drvr, Mike.

Sorry; I shoulda' been clearer... I now casually refer to all non-NTFS and
non-linux-specific file systems as VFAT. (I guess that even tho I'm a
relative newbie, I have adopted the linux lingo).  The "legacy" file system
that has the 4GB filesize limit and the one that is on my USB2 xternal HD
*IS* fat32.  I must maintain fat32 on that drive as it is a common
denominator for me; this drive must be portable among several "legacy"
flavors of windoze that do not capeesh NTFS or ext3, while FC3 (and other
earlier flavors of linux) and WinXPee *do* capeesh fat32.  (Early on, I made
the mistake of erasing the portable drive under WinXPee not realizing that
it would do so as NTFS, and was puzzled for a time as to why my
Win95-98-SE(know even unto us then m$-erschmidts as "sucking edition")-Me
machines were blind to the drive when connected.)

You could also use FAT32 if you want to maintain cross-platform 
readability.  However, there is a driver for Windows that will allow 
mounting/reading of ext2 filesystems: http://ext2fsd.sourceforge.net/
