It's been awhile since I did this, but IIRC one of the hurdles I had
to cross was making really sure that everyone was in sync as to the
windows workgroup name.

I had an episode as you describe, the printer would show  up in the
windows printers and faxes folder, but I'd get access denied if I
tried to do anything with it.
