[TriLUG] PHP tooling recommendations anyone?

I'm looking at a sizable php project, and I'd like to be able to
separate the xhtml design from the coding so that the ui design
experts can do their thing without getting tangled up in the code, and
the programmer(s) (i.e. me) can deal mostly with the code.
I've run across templating engines like smarty, patTemplate and
fastTemplate. Do any triluggers have any experience with these
things, I'm also open to other suggestions for php tooling.
