My particular solution was to:
1. uninstall original php version
2. re-install php ( slightly newer version )
3. install php-mysql  module for newer php version
This was all accomplished by using FC5's package manager.

And that be it!
It would probably have been okay to leave original php version installed 
and download php-mysql module for that version, but I wanted to play it 
safe.
